Catholic Social Teaching

At The Franciscan School, we see Catholic Social Teaching (CST) as an essential part of our faith. Throughout the year, our faculty and students focus on the themes through various discussions and service activities.

By incorporating CST into the fabric of our school, we help our students become more fully formed in Catholicism, develop a deeper understanding of how they can serve and operate in the world, and embody caring and compassionate hearts.

We set aside time for CST to ensure these essential teachings aren't incidental. They are intentional, visible, and actively practiced in the life of the school. Setting aside intentional time ensures that students grow not only academically, but also as people of faith who understand their responsibility to others.

The Seven Themes Of Catholic Social Teaching

Life & Dignity of the Human Person

The foundation of all principles; human life is sacred and must be respected from conception to natural death.

Family, Community, and Participation

People are social; marriage and family must be supported, and society must allow individuals to participate in the common good.

Rights and Responsibilities

Every person has a right to life and basic needs (food, shelter, education), which implies a responsibility to ensure these rights for others.

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

A society is judged by how its most vulnerable members are treated; their needs must be prioritized.

Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

The economy must serve people, not vice versa. Work is a form of participation in God’s creation, requiring fair wages and rights.

Solidarity

We are one human family regardless of national, racial, or economic differences, and we are responsible for our brothers and sisters.

Care for God's Creation

Stewardship of the planet is a requirement of faith, protecting people and the environment

Catholic Social Teaching calls our students to live out their faith through action, emphasizing dignity, compassion, and responsibility toward others, especially the most vulnerable. At our school, this commitment is reflected in a wide range of service projects that encourage students to put these values into practice. From supporting local communities to engaging in global outreach, these initiatives foster a spirit of solidarity, stewardship, and justice while helping students grow as faith-filled leaders dedicated to making a positive difference in the world.

Examples of service projects:

  • Plant seedlings in the St. Francis Community Garden
  • Coordinate and lead the living Rosary
  • Prepare snack bags for Catholic Parish Outreach
  • Host collection drives for organizations such as Diaper Train, Harvest Book, and Passage Home
  • Create Valentine's Day cards for residents at a local assisted living facility
  • Sort clothing for the migrant ministry drive
  • Collect money from chores at home for local charities
